Governance
Governance is the only student-run major class in the University of Washington, so this class is really unique to CEP students. Governance is very important to CEP because it creates retreats, steering, and committees. Those activities are run by seniors and juniors, which means CEP students are controlling and managing the major themselves. In addition, this governance class is an opportunity to let CEP students activate their participate and train their leadership skills. Students can make use of the knowledge where we learn from the classes. There are program advisors and seniors to guide every junior to build their skills, so there is less pressure.
Now, I would like to talk a little more about my participation in CEP's Governance class.
Retreat
Every year, there are two retreats in CEP, every beginning of the Fall quarter and Spring Quarter. Seniors and juniors hang out for overnight camping. Seniors and juniors not only learn more about each other but also create a quarterly plan for each committee. Also, committee points like to take this chance to post some issues to let all CEPsters get involved and vote for it. The retreat is a good time for community and social network building.
Committees - Communications
I was a part of the Communications committee for my first 2 quarters in CEP. Communications, as the name says, communicate with the other committees and external social contact. I chose to join this committee because of this special aspect: learning the software and soft-skills at the same time. Through this committee, I was able to learn how to use Illustration, InDesign, and WordPress. On the other hand, I was also able to communicate with other committees to make sure our pieces fit into their expectations. In the past 2 quarters in Communication, I created the CEP Open House's posters and various stickers. Through the process, I gained many valuable and useful experiences. When I graduate from CEP, I hope I can feel proud of my committee, work, and advancement.
Committees - Headlights
I was a part of the Headlights committee for my 3rd and 4th quarter in CEP. Headlights, as the name says, come in front of the major and receive the updated news for the CEP. I chose to join this committee because of this special aspect: learning how to keep improving our major's policy. Through this committee, I was able to learn how to communicate with the instructors and teaching assistant to develop a better course's contact. On the other hand, I was able to understand how to complete the full process of running a survey and focus group. In spring 2019 in Headlights, 4 committees' members and I were the ones who keep in touch with the CEP302's instructor and discussed on the course syllabus. The process provided a real-world experience to me of how to communicate with others, especially professors and teaching assistants.
Committees - PESÉ
I was a part of the Program Events and Student Engagement (PESÉ) committee for my 5th and final quarter in CEP. PESÉ plans and carries out many CEP events, especially of the Senior Project Night and Graduation. I chose to join this committee because of this special aspect: support logistics for other events (i.e. the Valentines Day's event and the Easter's event), and manages other activities that have a financial component such as CEP swag and fundraising. In this quarter, I learned how to oversee the successful execution of events (i.e. researches and purchases/secures event components, volunteer management, event debrief and documentation). Not every employee knows or even experience how to hold and run an event. Therefore, I believe these experiences I earned from PESÉ are super important and beneficial for my future career.
