The Background of Puget Sound Christian Clinic

The Puget Sound Christian Clinic (PSCC) is a free clinic providing health care to underserved individuals and families in King and Snohomish Counties. Services include integrated and comprehensive medical, dental, and mental health counseling. We know that there are more than half-a-million individuals are not able to access to any health care in Washington State. With the established practice and diverse base of staff and volunteers, PSCC can provide the health care to every patient that walks through the PSCC's doors. While we meet the immediate health-care needs of each patient, our long-term goal is to care for the whole individual, meeting the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of each patient.

Why would I like to work for PSCC?

The Puget Sound Christian Clinic (PSCC) is a place where I would like to work and learn. This is a place that is devoted to improving the community by heart, effort, and action. PSCC spends a lot of time on underserved individuals and families by offering access to quality, compassionate health care, and community action. Start from the establishment of The PSCC, it has been working with many neighborhoods to execute and revitalize the development in the King and Snohomish counties. It provides a stable and reliable revitalization framework for the whole community, thus, having more than the seventh year of successful implementation record.

For my internship this summer, I would like to learn from an organization that really focuses on revitalizing the whole neighborhood and building a friendly relationship between community and non-organizations. Another reason that draws my attention is that PSCC Board members are made up of residents, businesses, and property owners. This means no matter for the volunteers or staffs, they are including professional knowledge and skills from healthcare, advertising, marketing, outreach and organizing, politics, and communications. All these fields interest me a lot. This opportunity led me to work on the promotion of neighborhood assets and communicate with others.

Learning Goals

As a development intern in PSCC, I learned and worked as a coordinator for the projects that are assigned to me, especially in outreaching the public and other private companies. Through this process, I learned more skills and earned more experiences in communicating with the public. As in the governance class in CEP, we always require to communicate with different communities and be active in every activity, thus, showing an attitude which we care about our major, the community, and the environment. The main role of being a development intern is to build up a relationship with the public.

As a translator in PSCC, I made use my languages to help more patients to understand specific information. Thus, improved my English and keep practicing other foreign languages at the same time. It was a great opportunity to strengthen my language skills day by day in the real world.

Internship Position(s)

As a development intern in PSCC, I helped with procurement for the Vision Gala. One of the main tasks I did was outreach. Before we hold a fundraising Gala, there were lots of duties need to be done. Our teams keep sending email to different business in the States for fundraising and physical help.  I sent over 500 emails to businesses in Leavenworth (, WA), Orcas Island, Portland, Oregon, Los Angeles (, CA), and San Diego. Some owners and organizations responded to the email and asked for more details. Therefore, I had a good time reaching out to different companies. On the other hand, as a translator intern in PSCC, I helped at the clinic with reception, as a patient advocate, and medical translation during the medical appointments. Outside of the clinic hours, I assisted with the patient scheduling and translation of patient or PSCC materials.

I learned a lot from this opportunity. First, I earned the experience of communicating with the public by procurement for the Gala. I learned how to write an official letter asking for donation and physical help. Meanwhile, I also made use of the languages which I am fluent in and helped more people to receive the benefits from PSCC. I translated the documents of dental clinic volunteers, PSCC Framework, PSCC medical clinic volunteers, and PSCC PR packet documents into Chinese (simplified and traditional) and Vietnamese.

Field Supervision

I was super lucky to have my development manager, Emily Klever with me. The first day of work, she took me on a tour of the dental clinic and introduced all the staff in the office. Emily also gave me a comprehensive document at orientation  which included the background of PSCC, the responsibilities of this internship position, and other extra resources from PSCC. All the documents stated clear about the expectations and provided support at any time. In addition, she gave her personal phone number to me for contact at any time. The whole working period, I didn't feel that I was alone because Emily was always here to help.
